Almost every "the app can't find my TV" problem comes down to one of a small handful of causes, and nearly all of them are on the network side rather than the app itself — phones and TVs discover each other over local Wi‑Fi, so anything that interrupts, splits, or isolates that local traffic will break pairing. This guide walks through the causes in the order we see them most often, starting with the simplest checks and working toward router-level settings that are easy to overlook.
Confirm both devices are on the exact same network
Phone-to-TV discovery relies on both devices being reachable on the same local network segment. "Same Wi‑Fi" sounds simple, but it's the single most common point of failure, mostly because a lot of home routers create more than one network without making that obvious.
- Dual-band routers. Many routers broadcast separate network names for 2.4GHz and 5GHz — something like "HomeWiFi" and "HomeWiFi_5G". If your phone joined the 5GHz name and your TV joined the 2.4GHz name (a common default for TVs and streaming sticks, since 2.4GHz has better range), they're technically on different networks even though they share a password and an internet connection. Check the Wi‑Fi network name on both the phone's Wi‑Fi settings and the TV's network settings menu, and make sure they match exactly, including any suffix.
- Mesh Wi‑Fi systems. Mesh systems usually present one network name across every node, which is convenient, but some let you split bands or create a separate IoT network for smart devices. If you've enabled an IoT network and pointed your TV at it, your phone needs to join that same network too, or discovery won't work.
- Mobile data instead of Wi‑Fi. If your phone's Wi‑Fi has recently dropped and it silently fell back to cellular data, it's no longer on the local network at all. A quick glance at the status bar or Wi‑Fi settings screen confirms this.
The fastest way to verify a match is to open Wi‑Fi settings on the phone and the network settings on the TV side by side and compare the network name character for character.
Guest networks and client isolation
Even when a phone and TV share the same network name, they may still be unable to see each other if that network has client isolation (sometimes labeled AP isolation, device isolation, or guest network isolation) turned on. This is a router feature that intentionally keeps connected devices from communicating directly with each other, while still letting each one reach the internet. It exists to protect guests on a shared network from accessing each other's devices, but it also blocks the exact local discovery that a remote app depends on.
Guest networks ship with this enabled by default on most routers, which is why pairing frequently fails when a TV or a phone is connected to a "Guest" Wi‑Fi network instead of the main household one. To check:
- Log into your router's admin page (usually at an address like 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1) and look for a wireless or guest network section.
- Look for a setting named "AP isolation," "client isolation," or "allow guests to see each other."
- If your phone and TV are both on the main network rather than a guest network, isolation is less likely to be the cause — but some routers apply a form of isolation network-wide, so it's worth checking regardless.
If possible, move both the phone and the TV off any guest network and onto the primary household Wi‑Fi network for remote-control use.
Weak Wi‑Fi signal near the TV
A weak or unstable signal at the TV's location doesn't usually stop the initial pairing, but it's the leading cause of connections that drop mid-session, lag noticeably, or need to be re-established every few minutes. TVs are often placed against a wall, inside a media cabinet, or on the opposite side of the house from the router, all of which attenuate a Wi‑Fi signal.
A few ways to test and improve signal quality near the TV:
- Check the TV's own signal indicator. Most smart TV network settings screens show a signal strength bar or percentage. Anything consistently low, or a connection that fluctuates, points to a signal problem rather than an app problem.
- Test with a phone at the TV's location. Stand next to the TV and check your phone's Wi‑Fi signal bars and run a quick speed test. If it's noticeably weaker there than elsewhere in the house, the TV is likely experiencing the same thing.
- Reduce obstructions. Thick walls, metal cabinet backs, large mirrors, and even fish tanks can all weaken a Wi‑Fi signal. If the TV is enclosed in a cabinet, leaving the back panel open or angling the TV's Wi‑Fi antenna toward the room can help.
- Add a Wi‑Fi extender or mesh node. If the TV is far from the router, a mesh node or extender placed roughly halfway between the router and the TV usually improves both signal strength and consistency.
- Switch the TV to 5GHz or 6GHz if it's close to the router. These bands carry more data but have shorter range, so they work well at close distance and reduce interference from neighboring 2.4GHz networks.
- Use a wired connection where possible. If your TV supports Ethernet, plugging it directly into the router or a powerline adapter removes Wi‑Fi signal issues from the equation entirely for the TV's internet connection (the phone still needs Wi‑Fi to reach it, but a stable TV connection reduces one variable).
Router settings that can quietly block discovery
Beyond isolation, a few other router and phone-side settings can interfere with the local discovery protocols that remote apps use to find a TV on the network:
- mDNS/Bonjour filtering. Many remote apps rely on mDNS (multicast DNS, sometimes called Bonjour) to discover devices by name on the local network. Some routers, particularly ones with aggressive firewall or "smart" security features, filter or block multicast traffic by default. Look for settings related to "multicast filtering," "IGMP snooping," or "mDNS" in your router's advanced settings, and try disabling multicast filtering if it's present.
- Firewall rules on the router. Custom firewall rules, especially ones set up to block inter-device traffic for security, can have the same effect as client isolation. If you've customized firewall settings in the past, review them for anything that restricts local traffic between devices.
- A VPN active on the phone. A VPN app running on your phone routes its traffic through a remote server, which typically removes the phone from the local network's perspective, even though it still shows as connected to Wi‑Fi. If your remote app can't find your TV, check whether a VPN is active and try disabling it temporarily to see if that resolves the issue.
- A VPN or DNS-filtering app on the router itself. Some routers support always-on VPN or DNS-level content filtering. These occasionally interfere with local discovery in the same way a phone-side VPN does, so it's worth checking router-level VPN or filtering settings if the phone-side check doesn't turn anything up.
Local network permission on your phone
Modern phone operating systems require apps to explicitly request permission before they can scan and discover other devices on the local network. If this permission was denied, either accidentally or because a system prompt was dismissed too quickly, your remote app can be technically correct in every other way and still be unable to see any TVs.
- On iOS, go to Settings, find the remote app in the app list, and confirm "Local Network" is toggled on.
- On Android, the exact wording varies by manufacturer, but look in Settings under Apps, select the remote app, and check Permissions for anything related to "Nearby devices," "Local network," or "Wi‑Fi."
If you're not sure whether the permission was ever granted, the simplest fix is to open the relevant settings page directly and toggle it on manually — there's no harm in confirming a permission that's already enabled.
